Anita, IowaJune 1955

Insufficient Data

Summary

On June 16, 1955, a witness near Anita, Iowa reported a single object. The object was cigar shaped, two to six feet long, with blue and white markings and a red exhaust. It appeared about 500 to 1,000 feet above the ground. The observer noted a soft hissing sound. The original information was taken over the phone.

The Air Force record for the Iowa sighting lists the conclusion as insufficient data for evaluation. Officials said more information was promised in a later message but had not arrived, and any added detail would be forwarded. There was no report in the file.

The record also includes a separate card for a sighting near Topeka, Kansas. There, a USAF pilot saw a single round, green object the size of a grapefruit at arm's length, with a tail to a point, for about forty seconds. It appeared to burn out suddenly. Linked to a sighting in Minneapolis the same date at about the same time and heading, the Air Force evaluated that object as possibly astronomical.
