Summary

On the night of July 24-25, 1960, multiple witnesses in Alexandria, Louisiana reported seeing bright flashes of light in the sky. The sightings occurred between 11:53 p.m. on July 24 and 5:00 a.m. on July 25. According to the case file, a total of seven bright objects were observed during this period, all appearing in the northwestern portion of the sky near the Big Dipper constellation. The flashes themselves were visible for only two to five seconds, though the trails they left behind persisted for up to twenty seconds.

The primary witnesses were two observers attending a drive-in movie. One observer noticed the bright object and described it as distinctly different from falling stars or meteors he had seen before, since this object did not appear to move. The second observer, after being alerted by the first, scanned the sky and spotted the same object. Both placed the object at approximately the same point in the sky, locating it in the middle of the cup portion of the Big Dipper. Two additional witnesses at a different drive-in theater on another side of town reported seeing similar objects at around the same time, though in their case the objects appeared to be moving. The objects were described as white and extremely bright, with some displaying wings or elongated shapes measuring up to four inches by fifteen inches.

An Air Force intelligence officer interviewed the witnesses and noted that the descriptions were very similar to meteors entering Earth's atmosphere. The case file states that this was "probably part of a meteor shower." The file also notes that while the intelligence officer used every available means to investigate, the exact cause of the phenomenon could not be definitively determined. The Air Force ultimately evaluated this case as unidentified.
